Copains and the Quest for the Gluten Free Croissant

Indy and I spent the early part of December 2023 exploring Christmas markets in France and Switzerland. Our first stop was Paris, which we had last visited in summer of 2018. Since our last visit, it seems like the Paris gluten free scene has exploded. There are multiple new bakeries including Copains, which is a 100% gluten free facility with a classic boulangerie feel and strong sustainability values. Their cafes have a bright and airy feel and upon entry you are greeted by a friendly staff member who will help you pile your tray full of gluten free goodies.

Where is this place? Copains has various locations across Paris. We visited a few different locations and found they all had a similar selection and ambience.

When did we go? December 2023

What’s good? Although we came for the croissants, Copains was full of tasty gluten free treats of the sweet and savory variety. We enjoyed a warmed Léon - Croque for breakfast several times per week along with a cappuccino or American from their legitimate little coffee bar. The New York Roll (pistachio), apple pie, apple turnover were all highlights.

How are the croissants? The croissant at Copains is pretty tasty with somewhat sweet dough and relatively fluffy texture. We sampled between ~5 croissants during our travels and did notice that there was some variation in the sweetness of the dough. See video below for Indy's official review.

Toast’s opinion? All Copains  locations were dog friendly and were excited to see Toast with us.

Verdict: Copains is a solid staple in the Paris scene which offers quality, variety, and vibes. Indy keeps talking about wanting to move to Paris so he can get coffee and a pastry every morning.
