Gluten Free Rösti Pizza in Rheinfelden

Writer: RachaelRachael

Rheinfelden is a tiny town which spans the Swiss-German border. Literally half of the town is in Switzerland and the other half is in Germany with a border crossing on a footbridge. Another fun fact about this town is that it is situated on a large salt spring, which is also the centerpiece for one of the most spectacular health spas we’ve visited; Sole Uno features soaking pools, saunas, steam rooms, and a salty floating pool referred to by the locals as Switzerland’ Dead Sea. The Swiss side of the town has a picturesque pedestrian friendly town square lined with local shops and restaurants. During our visit, we enjoyed a lovely meal at Rhein-Mühle, which is a very Swiss restaurant with Mediterranean food and a very friendly staff. Their specialty is the rösti pizza, which is basically a pizza made on a rösti which is a round cake made of grated potatoes (i.e., a giant hash brown). Since the crust is potato and not wheat, these are naturally gluten free.

Where is this place? In the middle of the pedestrian zone in the Swiss side of Rheinfelden

When did we go? December 2023

What’s good? The menu was well labeled–like many Swiss restaurants–and there were a variety of gluten free items, but we can never resist trying the rösti pizza. We each ordered one and they were both truly delicious and filling. They come in a cast iron skillet, which added to the home cooked feel.

Toast’s opinion? The local waitstaff at the restaurant is extremely friendly. They welcome both Toast and our friend’s dachshund Jax.

Verdict: Rheinfelden is a great day trip from Basel and don’t miss the rösti pizza at Rhein-Mühle.
