Snapdragon is one of those bakeries that has an amazing assortment of beautiful and scrumptious pastries but only a small portion of them–if any–are gluten free on any particular day. The reason we keep coming back to this place is that in addition to being a bakery, it’s also a tasty vegetarian restaurant that offers some high quality non-baked-good gluten free items for breakfast, lunch, and brunch (the cafe is only open until 3 PM). The restaurant also offers an adorable garden dining setting that is a must visit during the spring months. If you choose to sit inside you can grab a table next to the fireplace or find a spot on one of the mismatched comfy armchairs that gives off vibes similar to one of those cafes you’d occupy for several hours for marathon college study sessions.
Where is this place? Snapdragon is located on Vashon Island, but if you don’t want to take the ferry you can pick up their baked goods at their West Seattle pop up.
When did we go? February 2024 and May 2023
What’s good? Although a lot of the goods available at Snapdragon are full of gluten, they have a rotating menu that usually contains a few gluten free brunch options that do not disappoint. Think scrambles, frittatas, and other brunchy dishes. During our last visit, Indy enjoyed some very delicious black bean enchiladas. They didn’t carry any gluten free baked goods during our 2024 visit, but in 2023 we devoured an oatmeal and marionberry bar. The staff informed us that they usually provide 102 gluten free offerings a week.
How are the croissants (bakeries)? Sadly Snapdragon doesn’t have croissants. In fact, they typically only offer a very small selection of gluten free items so we’re not hopeful about this place joining the quest for the perfect gluten free croissant.
Toast’s opinion? Vashon Island can be a tough place for dogs, but the outdoor garden setting made this an easy place to take Toast. When we visited in the winter we were also able to escape the rain as long as she stayed inside her carrier.
Verdict: Snapdragon doesn’t offer a large quantity of gluten free items, but the quality of the food is high enough to warrant them getting a Tiny Gluten Free review.
